Our full day Pre-K program is taught by Mrs. Karen Collins. The children utilize the latest technology (Interactive SmartBoards) in their daily classroom instruction as they also incorporate centers and group projects. They also attend specials once a week, including Library, Computers, Art and Physical Education. The children establish a wonderful friendship with our Eighth Graders as pen-pals; and the Eighth Graders mentor the children and act as chaperones when the children attend monthly Mass.
Kindergarten is and exciting time and the kindergarten at St. Augustine’s offers a wide variety of activities which prepare children for first grade. Our religious program includes learning prayers, songs, listening to Bible stories and other activities that focus on learning our faith. Our math program gives children the opportunity to explore with manipulatives to learn about shapes, number concepts, time, money and simple addition and subtraction. We also use calendar math each morning.
Our reading program focuses on literacy. The children listen to stories, write in journals and poetry books, and read books at their level. They also do shared reading and writing. Students are reading on their own at the end of kindergarten. Children also do art, science and social studies activities. Other activities include weekly Library, Gym, Computers, Art and Music classes.
Miss Gaffney the kindergarten teacher has a B.S. degree in Early Childhood Education from Southern Connecticut State College and M.S. in Elementary Education from The University of Bridgeport. She has been teaching kindergarten at St. Augustine for more than twenty-five years.

Our first graders make the transition from Kindergarten to a more structured classroom atmosphere. Mrs. Rosemarie Young leads her first graders to be enthusiastic learners through creative lessons. Reading and writing are given great emphasis as the children use their kindergarten skills to build new words and concepts to become thoughtful readers and skillful writers.
Religion classes explore the love of God as seen in Jesus through not only the class text, but through many bible stories which are brought to life through role-playing, song and movement.
First graders discover their immediate and far-reaching surroundings in the Social Studies curriculum. Science brings to light many discoveries about plants, animals, and the world around them. Both classes are highlighted with many fun and group projects and activities.
All of our students enjoy special subjects such as Art, Music, Library skills, and Physical Education which are taught by excellent specialists.
Mrs. Rosemarie Young has taught in the Diocese of Bridgeport school system for eighteen years. Her first graders are fully engaged in a balanced literacy program of reading and writing. Along with small group instruction the children use the SmartBoard to reinforce their reading and math skills.
