Religion is the center of our curriculum. Students learn how much God loves us, how he always forgives us, and His great commandment – to love one another as He loves us. They learn songs and prayers including the Guardian Angel prayer. The students listen to and learn Bible stories and act some of them out. The students also learn about the Church, some of the Sacraments, the mass, and the history of the Church. Two highlights in the kindergarten curriculum are the creation of a miniature village of Bethlehem and the reenactment of the Christmas story. Religion in second grade prepares the students for First Reconciliation and for First Holy Communion . Those preparing to receive First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion also participate in their parish religious education program for the immediate sacramental preparation.
The Superkids reading program is used in kindergarten through second grade. It is a comprehensive core reading program designed specifically for the primary grades. The program teaches children to read and write at the same time. Handwriting, spelling, and simple grammar and mechanics are integrated into the reading instruction so students see from the beginning that they can read what they write and write what they read. In the Superkids program, reading skills are developed in concert with other language skills so that children understand the integration of written and spoken language. When a new sound, word, or skill is introduced, children always "hear it, see it, say it, and write it." In this way, all the skills children need to read and write are taught in multiple modes—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.
In the second grade the program includes a Superkids magazine with lots of interesting projects and activities. The students in second grade are also introduced to chapter books and read several during the year. In 2010 our first annual Superkids Celebration, the idea of one of the students, was held in June. Our annual celebration of Dr. Suess’ birthday with the first grade and second grade is always fun and includes a breakfast of Green Eggs and Ham prepared by the teachers.
Using both Math Their Way (Grades K & 1) and Sadlier Mathematics concepts are introduced such as patterning, graphing, calendar knowledge, time, number recognition and order, addition and subtraction and expanded upon in each grade. Manipulatives are used with both programs to increase student understanding. Calendar math is used daily and incorporates science and social studies through discussion of weather and historical events.During calendar math we count the numbers of days we’ve been in school until we reach the 100th Day which we celebrate by a day of activities centering around 100. Simple problem solving is also introduced in kindergarten and gradually gets more difficult in grades 2 and 3. In second grade we use Simple Solutions, a homework program that has proven successful in many schools and school districts. Aligned with NCTM standards, Simple Solutions provide for the reinforcement and practice of skills which are critical to the development of automaticity and fluency. It is a supplemental program to the mathematics curriculum, and its purpose is to provide daily distributed practice. This practice allows students to regularly and systematically revisit material that has been introduced by the classroom teacher. Research has shown that information that is studied for a year or less will be retained for only a year or less However, material that is studied for three or four years may be retained for as long as 50 years, beyond the last practice. A new skill becomes automatic with sustained repetition and practice over time.
Social studies concepts such as simple maps, socialization, the structure of government, and community are introduced. Beginning with their home, school and neighborhood community the students then learn about larger communities such as city and state. Some classes also learn about different current events through Scholastic News, a weekly magazine.
Science concepts such as plants, weather and seasons are explored.
Other activities include weekly Art, Music, Library, Information Technology and Physical Education.
